Gestalt dialogues are the intrapersonal discourses of the topdog and underdog coined by Fritz Perls to describe a self-torture transaction that people play within themselves in order to avoid anxiety that they encounter in their environment. Understanding the dynamics between the topdog and underdog allows a person to be aware of internal conflicts which hinder him to grow. Participants will be trained in facilitating the shuttling of forces the topdog and underdog. The training will include the practice of empty chair techniques and experiments which aids in balancing of intrapsychic elements in order to lessen anxiety, distress and frustration.

Description:

According to Jon Kabbat-Zinn, Mindfulness means paying attention on purpose, moment by moment and non-judgmentally. In reality, individuals are living in the age of distraction nowadays with internet generation. People have attention difficulties, they tend to be forgetful, and the tendency of difficulty in managing their thoughts, emotions and behavior. Mindfulness has been shown to improve well-being (Carmody and Baer, 2008) and reduce psychological distress (Coffey and Hartman, 2008). Participants are expected to demonstrate an experiential understanding of mindfulness through participation in actual practice sessions such as mindful breathing, mindful eating and mindful listening-talking. Evidence-based mindfulness research will also be discuss. Overview: What is mindfulness? Why do we need to be mindful? How can we practice mindfulness in our daily lives?

This workshop is intended to orient student and student leaders on activities aimed at helping peers battle depression and suicide. According to the American College Health Association (ACHA) the suicide rate among young adults, ages 15-24, has tripled and suicide is currently the second most common cause of death among college students. These young people are often away from home and friends for the first time. They're living with strangers, far from their support systems, and working under intense pressure. Promotion of close personal relationships with friends, family, faculty or staff; resiliency skills; healthy habits, including adequate sleep, diet and physical exercise could help in promoting mental health which are part of counseling services. With the growing number of students afflicted by depression and alarming rate of incidence of suicide, activities for its prevention are essential. Understanding and awareness of the nature of depression and suicide is not enough but concrete activities that would make the lives of the students more meaningful would be of great help.
